EMPKILL(1) EMPKILL(1)

NAME
empkill - kill Empress processes gracefully

SYNOPSIS
       empkill pid [pid ... ]

DESCRIPTION
empkill allows a user to kill Empress processes in such a way that
cleanup is possible. A 'soft' termination signal is sent to the pro-
cess a number of times. If the process remains alive, a 'sure' termi-
nation is sent to the process and this is logged to a file.

pid This is the process id of the Empress process which must be
terminated. It is normally determined by running the 'ps'
                 system command.

The 'soft' termination signal is determined by the variable
MSKILLSIGNAL; it is 15 (SIGTERM) by default.

This signal is sent to the process a number of times as determined by
the variable MSKILLRETRY, which has a default value of 10. A sleep
period determined by MSKILLSLEEP (default 5 seconds) occurs between
retry attempts. Only if the process is still alive after the retries
have been made is the 'sure' termination sent.

The use of the 'sure' termination is logged to a file found within the
directory specified by MSKILLLOGDIR. By default this is the file
       ${EMPRESSPATH}/rdbms/spool/log/<username>.log.
